I just wanted to smoke a cigarette in the kitchen and work on something on my iMac. So I thought: “Hey I could switch on Remote Access and control it via Chicken of the VNC on my iBook.”
But unfortunately a lot of my keys didn’t work as expected.
- “y” and “z” where switched (I could understand and live with it) but also
- “:” and “?ñ” (I am using a German keyboard layout) and similar.
This is very unpleasant if you want to chat (OK, I said I would work but you know…).
After I finished (smoking that is) I found something about keyboard layouts that should be both english/US in the International Preferences pane, but I wanted my German keyboard layout.
Hm. Perhaps it’s worth a try: So essentially I found out:
If you want to use Apple Remote Access with Chicken of the VNC as a VNC client and use a different keyboard layout (i.e. German) you have to set the keyboard layout on the controlled computer to the desired one and on the controlling computer to “U.S.”
Tips:
- You can change the keyboard layout in “System Preferences” -> “International” -> “Language”
- You can enable Remote Desktop in “System Preferences” -> “Sharing” -> “Services”: Check “Apple Remote Desktop”
